You don't always have to be a Hero

Updated: Nov 14, 2022

The saying you don’t have to be a hero does not mean you are someone who does not take action. This rule is about having the self-control to walk away from a potentially dangerous situation — even if a little part of you does not want to.

Trust me, I know how hard this can be. I was in a restaurant a few years ago in Riverside, California when 3 men began to point and laugh at me as I paid for my order. As I stood next to the door I saw them look at each other and walk toward me, creating a situation where I could have been surrounded. Luckily, I did not stay to find out what they had planned. I played it safe and walked into the general area where there was a crowd. As I looked back the men stopped walking in my direction. I kept eye contact making sure to let them know I was paying attention.

Maybe it was nothing. Maybe they had friends outside and they were going to rob me. My main point is that I did not let my ego get in the way; I didn’t feel the need to prove myself.

At Street Ready we want you to know that it is wise to avoid escalation. You never know when you may be dealing with someone who has more skills than you, or even worse; someone with nothing to lose.
